Where I grew up, instant photos were seen as a cheap form of photography. Something fun, ultimately forgotten, just for the moment. As a late adopter of a Polaroid SX-70, I’m beginning to understand the allure of instant pictures. It’s unlike digital photography where the negatives are dispensable; a Polaroid in these days is precious, its chemicals sensitive and volatile. Of the whole pack, I only have this and another of my neighbour’s cat to mark the beginnings of this journey.

About this project

an ocean apart is a photographic project by Jasmin and Amy, who live in Sydney and New Orleans respectively.

It chronicles photographs by the two, taken weekly, separated by the Pacific Ocean and two distinctly different hemispheres.

When not designing, taking photos or rearranging items around my apartment, I can be found tending a vegetable garden or sipping espresso coffee. I shoot most photos with an Olympus Pen E-P2 and a Canon 1N, and am enamoured of the creamy tones of Kodak Portra 400.

Amy New Orleans, USA

I enjoy taking photos, doodling in Photoshop, making people laugh, and the outdoors. I shoot mostly with a Canon t1i and sometimes with the ever delightful Pentax K1000.
